The Re-elected President’s Podium – Chris “C.J.” Jones

Our last meeting was at the home of Will and Jonna Walker.  If you missed it, let me tell you what you missed:  a lot of food, a lot of beer, and a lot of friendly conversations.  We enjoyed spiral cut ham, smoked salmon, a case of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, Harpoon Winter Warmer, and a wide variety of other commercial seasonal offerings.  What kind of homebrew was there?  Barley wine, pale ale, cold ale, great ale.  Rich Sens brought two growlers of homebrew, including one made with Central American yeast.  Yeast from St. Louis?  What’s so special about that?  Dooh!  Yeast from the part of the Americas that connects Mexico to South America, not the from central U.S.A.

We also had elections, and we voted on the Club homebrewing contest rules.  Read on, homebrewing brothers and sisters, and we’ll see you in January.

The Next Meeting Location – Diane Catanzaro

For our first meeting of 2004, the HRB&TS will meet Wednesday December 7 at 7:30 pm at G.F. Keagan’s Restaurant at 1550 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach.  Help ring in the brew  year with some fine holiday and seasonal ales!  Keagan’s has reasonable prices and great hospitality, with a wide variety of food including lots of appetizers, salads, etc. if you want something light, and a wide range of entrees.  Come early and have a leisurely dinner and a nice beer!  The location is at Hilltop East.  Last time we met here we finished off the evening at Hilltop Brewing (a 2 minute walk!) Those who attended got to taste Mike Pensinger’s Hilltop microwbrews and enjoy some acoustic entertainment. They also got to watch (or try to ignore) Jonna and yours boogie down to a funky version of Play that Funky Music White Boy. While we can’t (and really don’t want to.....to be honest, there has been little demand) promise a reprise of that auspicious occasion at least the beer will be good. Incidentally, Mike and his wife Melissa got a nice mention in the new Mid Atlantic Brewing News regarding their ownership of Virginia Beach Homebrew Hobbies (http://www.homebrewusa.com/) on Shore Drive and Mike’s brewing at Hilltop.

To get to G. F. Keagans, take I-264 to the First Colonial Road North exit. About the second light, turn right on Laskin Road.   About 2-3 lights down, take a left into Hilltop East’s parking lot.  G.F. Keagan’s is on the left, just a short walk from Hilltop Brewing.  Bring any type of homebrew, but leave the commercial beers at home!  Keagan’s phone is 422-9545. See you there!

Last Month’s HRB & TS Barleywine Contest Revisited – C.J. Jones

Last month’s contest was for the HRB & TS Barleywine championship of the World.  Unbeknownst to me, Victor’s two entries were actually one entry with two different designations o the cap.  Victor told us the situation, and suggested that we correct the Barleywine standings to reflect that he had one entry, not two.

So, here is the corrected list of the three best homebrewed beers in the last contest for the 2003 calendar year:

First Place:  Victor Perotti’s “BW VIC”, with a mean score of 40;

Second Place:  Doug Boyd’s “BW”, with a mean score of 33.6.

Third Place:  C.J. and Diane’s Barleywine, with a score in the upper twenties (the score sheets are downstairs, too far for me to walk ….)

One entry from Diane and I brought up the aft end of the contest.

Here is the final, final 2003 Briess Cup standings:
