Willkommen bis Oktober:
Once again, we are getting ready to celebrate the marriage of King Ludwig I in
grand style. We are preparing for one of our best meetings of the brewing year,
Oktoberfest at Will and Jonna’s. This meeting always features good
homebrew and authentic German cuisine courtesy of the club and your hosts. For
the second year in a row we will offer our silent auction. This years prizes
include a complete catalogue of New Brewer Magazine, a professional
brewers publication, from 1991 through 2000. Also offered will be Brewing
Techniques, a defunct publication that was acclaimed and popular with home
brewers, from 1993 to 1999 which current sells on ebay for $3.50 per issue.
Also back issues of Zymurgy from 1988 to 1998. I have a complete list of
the issues offered so feel free to contact me with any questions. Also offered
will be a wide variety of beer and brewing equipment. Also since 4 officers
will be attending the GABF next week it is possible that you will see items
from this festival. This is your chance to pick up that extra ingredient or
piece of equipment that you’ve always wanted and help the clubs treasury. So
bring your checkbook and have fun. I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like.
Last month we had an enjoyable meeting at the farmhouse retreat of Jason and Lacy Kuller. We had a good turn out, some great beers and some of the best cuisine we’ve had at a meeting in awhile. Jason is becoming the king of hop-laden beers and we all enjoyed exploring his kingdom. Thank you Jason and Lacy. Speaking of brewers on the move JP Messier brought a lemon wit to the recent judging that he brewed with the extract late method featured in the September 06 issue of BYO, also online at http://www.byo.com Extract brewers should talk with JP about this technique because it does result in a very lite colored brew.
If you’re using a new or experimental brewing technique consider giving a presentation at a meeting or writing a newsletter article.
Although it’s a few months off yet, it’s not
too late to consider running for office in HRBTS. This could be your
opportunity to leave your mark on this beer club that we all know and love. We
have many new members and new officers would be a way to keep the club growing.
New faces bring new ideas and innovations. So think about running! Also at the
October officer meeting we will conduct our annual review of our competition
rules and procedures. Members wishing contribute to this process can email
their suggested changes to me.
Looking forward to see you at Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest Party!
October 4 at 7:00 pm
What???!!! You didn’t get to Oktoberfest this year either???? Well, no worries mein freund! Hitch up yer leiderhosen and get your tokhus to the October meeting of the HRB&TS, which just happens to be the club’s annual Oktoberfest party at Will (“Wilheim”) and Jonna (“Johanna”) Walker's home. This annual rite of fall is a club tradition that is not to be missed! The party begins at 7:00 (SEVEN O’CLOCK), [as opposed to our typical 7:30 official start time]. The party often spills out of the house into the lake-lined backyard, so do bring a sweater or light jacket in case as it may be chilly after the sun goes down. A thank-you beer to leave with our kind hosts is a well-deserved gesture of appreciation for Will and Jonna’s generosity in once again hosting the club Oktoberfest party.
German food will be provided by the club and YOU are invited to bring beer!!!! Oktoberfest style beers of course are welcome, but feel free to bring any style of homebrew (you brewers out there) or commercial beer (tasters, bring something fun and exotic!). Extra credit for bringing beers from independent German breweries like Schneider (Aventinus Eisbock and Edel-Weisse are two favorites), or some unique beechwood-smoked rauschbier. Food provided by the club will include German sausage (wurst), sauerkraut, and potato salad. If anyone wants a tasty Boca veggie sausage, Chris and I will bring extra, just ask! You are welcomed to bring a side dish or another food item to share.
We had our Club Octoberfest judging on September 20. Anticipating our usual deluge of lager entries from our membership, Diane and I tried to eat most of the food in our refrigerator so there would be room to store, no, to lager, all of the entries in preparation for the judging.
It’s a good thing we did, or there wouldn’t have been room for the three entries. Our judges, Tom Byrnes, Diane Catanzaro, Paul McCune, J. P. Messier, and Rob Sisson, put their noses and palates to the grindstone, and rated each of them.
When the totals were tallied, here’s how things stood:
First Place, J. P. Messier with his K-Town Octoberfest, good for three HRBTS Cup points;
Second Place, Brian Edgar, with a Rocktoberfest, good for two HRBTS Cup points; and
Third Place, Tim Hobbs, with a Buctoberfest, earning him one HRBTS Cup point.
The current HRBTS Cup standings are in the table, following this text. The competition is too close to call, it’s anyone’s game! There are only two more judging sessions for this HRBTS Cup contest (October and November judging sessions; the beers you judge in December 2006 are actually the first beers in the 2007 beer calendar). Somebody could win by a head!
