C.J,   President HRB&TS

Meeting Location – Diane Catanzaro

The June 2nd  meeting of the HRB&TS will be at the Hampton home of Mike and Terri Connell. A relaxing setting on the banks of the Indian river, some great homebrew, and like minded beer lovers talking smack….sounds like a good way to enjoy this beautiful June weather! Dress for outdoor weather as the meeting is in the backyard.

The meeting starts at 7 pm and there will be some type of grilling food and condiments provided by the club. Side dishes or munchies are also greeted with open arms (and mouths). Remember that you can bring commercial beers as well as homebrew to summer backyard-meetings.  It would be nice of you to pop an extra homebrew in the cooler for Mike and Terri….we really appreciate your hosting the HRB&TS!

Competition Corner – Eric Gold

Rob Camlin hosted our competition this month because he was looking for some tasty wheat beers.  I think most all of our beers could have benefited from a little more aging and more carbonation, however we did manage to find a winner in my Belgian Wit (Score 29.75) even though it had a weird aroma from the Indonesian Peppercords I put in it.  Two hefeweizens (JP and CJ/Diane) tied for second place, with a score of 26. Even given the common ingredient wheat, it is very difficult to compare these vastly different styles.  They do both however taste good during the summer and we'll be sharing more of these beers at the next meeting and at our upcoming summer picnic. Thanks again to our hosts the Camlins, and also to judges Diane C, Tom, Rob, and JP.   Maybe next year we will pick one of these two styles to focus on.

Next up for our competition schedule, we'll taste Meads.  This is typically a pretty popular month so bring your best and prepare for some fun!  We're still pegging down an exact date for this competition because a few of us will be on vacation, although I'm hoping to have it the first week in July.  Stay tuned!

IT'S STILL NOT TOO LATE to reserve the month matching one of your favorite styles! If you are willing to host a monthly judging competition, please email me at egold@vt.edu to reserve your month.  We bring beer to your house :)
