Presidential Musings - C.J., aka. Chris Jones.
First thing, a recap of last month, in the event that you missed something. Our last meeting, at Beach Brewing Company, was great fun – beer provided by the brewery (an Octoberfest) and many homebrewers, pizza provided by HRBTS. Then we had our Hampton Roads Cup IPA contest, where eight entries went bottle-to-bottle to see which one was grandest; my memory could be off a tad, but I believe BARF took first, and 6-8, while HRBTS took 2-5; more info to follow when Mr. Burns (Tom, not Montgomery) returns from the Great American Beer Festival tomorrow, with Rob and Jodie in tow. News flash – the Wynkoop Brewing Company, where my brother Marty works, won two medals at the GABF!
On Wednesday, 5 October, we’ll be having our annual Octoberfest soiree at the Walker abode in Virginia Beach; food, beer, a silent auction, and fellowship, brothers and sisters. Bring your checkbooks, because HRBTS does not accept IOUs in lieu of payment for auctioned items. Parking is at a premium in and around Will and Jonna’s, so carpool if you can.
Speaking of Will, he will be brewing again soon. Both he and I have picked fresh hops in our respective yards, so we’re going to produce a fresh-hopped session beer with the fruits of our labors in the next week or so. You’ll be on the receiving end of said beer in four to six weeks.
++++++++++
Anyone interested in an education session at meetings? We typically don’t try to hold court during general meetings, but we could have a sidebar conversation going for five to ten minutes if there is a desire for one. Have a subject that you’d like to hear about, or better yet, have a subject that you’d like to chat about, let me know.
See you on Wednesday! C.J.

HRB&TS 2011 Oktoberfest Party!
October 5 at 6:30 pm
This Wednesday the HRB&TS October meeting will celebrate the Party Formerly Known as the Wedding Reception of Konig Ludwig and his Bride Theresa, perhaps you know it by its other name, Oktoberfest. Heute gehen! That's German for 'tonite we party!' We'll have German food, a silent auction with beery and not-so-beery stuff to bid on and perhaps win, and lots of kameradeschaft (camaraderie). German garb always adds to the party. If you've got leiderhosen what are you saving it for? Feathered German hat with beer buttons on it? Of course. Dirndl? Darn it, yes. Birkenstocks? Not JUST for German hippies. Karl Lagerfeld? His fashion is lager-inspired. Any groovy beery or German garb? This is the day to wear it!
We start earlier than usual, at 6:30, to have ample time to get our German groove on and hopefully have some competitive bidding at the silent auction (a fundraiser for the club summer picnic, next year's Oktoberfest, etc.! Please bring a beer as a 'hospitality gift' for Will and Jonna who are so gracious to host this annual party for the HRB&TS. You guys are wunderbar!
So, don’t let your weiner schnitzel….Will and Jonna’s spacious kitchen/living room/porch/yard will be transformed miraculously into the Hofbrau Haus (provided you taste enough reinheitsgebot-inspired malt beverage) and before you can say “piesacken" you’ll be
schuhplattling (shoe-slapping) to the volksmusik. The party often spills out of the house into the lake-lined backyard, so you may wish to bring a sweater or light jacket in case we get some festive autumnal nip in the air. The club will supply brats and other German foods (potato salad, sauerkraut). There will be some type of veggie sausage for those who prefer their meal sans fleish (without meat). If you want to bring a food item to share that is welcomed but far from required.
The club will provide a pony keg of local Oktoberfest beer, but you know we crave more....bring some German beer, non-German beer, homebrew or commercial brew. Looking for some German beer to share? The beer styles of Oktoberfest, dunkel, hefeweizen, dunkelweizen, schwarzbier, rauchbier, Berliner Weiss, helles, kolsch, german pils, and the bock family (bock, dopplebock, eisbock) may be calling your name. Pumpkiny seasonals, hoppy antidotes, and all beer styles are welcome!
